Field Testing Method Used in Evaluating Acute Commensal Rodenticides

The field testing protocol developed in cooperation with the Registration Division, Office of Pesticide Programs of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for the evaluation of an acute rodenticide as a bait for use against commensal rats (Rattus norvegicus and R. rattus) and mice (Mus musculus) and as a tracking powder for use against house mice is described. In addition to the experimental design, site selection, identification, safety, and important equipment in field testing are discussed. Basically, the tests were divided into three phases: (1) pretreatment population census, (2) treatment (placement of bait or tracking powder), and (3) post-treatment population censusing. Food consumption was always used as one method of censusing the pest population. Live trapping, which includes recapture of previously marked individuals, was the second method used.
