Rezension: A historical treatise written in 1964. Lots of research of original sources went into it. The last 1/4 are footnotes, bibliography, index. Describes how overland wagons, stage coaches and steamboats gave way to railroads. Transport of freight was as important of that of people. Indians discussed mainly as obstacles. Much effort and engineering went into extending transport over these long distances. Ends with discussion of the development of roads, lead initially by bicyclists (wheelman) as automobiles are just beginning to appear. A reminder that 60 miles in a day was once an impressive distance.
