This paper will discuss the duties facility owners and operators owe participants and spectators in the ice skating and ice hockey environment. These duties have been established by case law, standards in the industry, and the safety and risk management literature in sports and recreation. There will also be a discussion of court cases that illustrate the importance of incorporating risk management principles and industry standards into operating procedures. The consequences, when these principles are not followed, will also be addressed based on results of litigated cases.
